The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine is a long-living species of pine tree found in the higher mountains of the Great Basin region in the western United States. These trees are famous for their ability to survive in extremely harsh environments and for being among the oldest known living organisms on Earth.


Habitat and Distribution

These trees grow in isolated groves at high elevations, usually between 9,800 and 11,000 feet, in eastern California, Nevada, and Utah. They thrive in dry, rocky, alkaline soils where other plants struggle to survive. The cold temperatures, strong winds, and short growing seasons create a challenging environment that actually contributes to their longevity.


Physical Characteristics

Great Basin Bristlecone Pines have a distinctive appearance with gnarled, twisted trunks and branches. Their wood is dense and resinous, which helps protect them from insects, fungi, and rot. The trees often appear partially dead, with only narrow strips of living bark connecting the roots to small clusters of green needles. Their needles grow in groups of five and can remain on the tree for up to 40 years, which helps conserve energy.


Age and Longevity

The most remarkable feature of these trees is their extreme age. The oldest known living specimen, named Methuselah, is estimated to be over 4,850 years old. Another tree, discovered in 2013, is believed to be over 5,000 years old. Their slow growth in harsh conditions contributes to their durability - the dense wood they produce is resistant to decay.

Scientists study the tree rings of bristlecone pines to learn about past climate conditions. Each ring represents one year of growth, and patterns in these rings provide information about historical temperatures, rainfall, and environmental changes.
